What Does the Honda and GM Partnership Mean?

GM and Honda Logos

The Honda and General Motors (GM) partnership is basically good news for drivers who want their hands on a fully electric vehicle at an affordable price. While most automakers, including Honda and GM, have been working on or releasing their own electric lineup, electric vehicles (EV) still cost comparably higher than most gas-powered vehicles. Your average driver will probably not be able to access one within their budget to enjoy the benefits of an electric model. Even with state incentives like the Charge Up New Jersey program, chances are an EV is still a splurge for most people. Through the Honda and GM partnership, there will be a new lineup of electric models priced under $30,000, which is a realistic price point for more drivers!

When Will These Affordable Electric Vehicles Be Available?

These brands are still producing this lineup with shared Honda and GM electric batteries, such as the solid-state batteries and GM’s Ultium battery technology. However, it is expected to be on sale by the year 2027. If you want to enjoy the electric performance before then, you are more than welcome to choose one of the current Honda hybrids for sale (Honda Accord Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Honda Insight). Want an all-electric model instead in Tinton Falls? You might be able to find a pre-owned Honda Clarity Electric in the used electric inventory as it is no longer in production. Honda also revealed plans for upcoming all-electric models like the 2024 Honda Prologue!

More Honda and GM Partnership Facts

Learn more about this partnership with the following notable facts:

  • The models in this lineup will share a common platform, new Honda & GM electric battery technologies (such as solid-state batteries and GM’s Ultium battery technology), and materials (such as lithium-metal and silicon).
  • The Honda and GM partnership is an ongoing bid to generate more sales than Telsa.
  • Honda and GM also plan to target a bigger audience via the vehicle type. They will be producing more compact crossover vehicles, which is the biggest selling auto sector in the world with annual volumes of more than 13 million vehicles.
  • These major automakers have collaborated previously when Honda previously invested $750 million in Cruise, GM’s majority-owned autonomous vehicle unit, while GM has produced two EVs for Honda for the 2024 model year. They have also partnered up on battery modules and fuel cell vehicles together!
  • Not only are affordability and accessibility priorities for this partnership, but environmental sustainability is also another priority. By working with one another, GM and Honda firmly believe that they’ll be able to achieve each company’s respective environmental goals faster. Honda wants to reach carbon neutrality on a global basis by 2050 while GM wants to achieve carbon neutrality in its global products and operations by 2040 and eliminate tailpipe emissions from light-duty vehicles in the United States by 2035.
