Reading the Tire Size

You’ve read the tire size, but are you wondering what everything means? We understand that it can look a little confusing, so check out our example below and learn how to read your vehicle’s tire size.

Example: P225/50R17 94V

P: The p means the tire is for a passenger vehicle. Other letters you may see are LT (Light Truck), T (Temporary), or ST (Special Trailer).

225: These first three numbers are the width of your tires, which means they should measure 225 millimeters from sidewall to sidewall.

50: This is the height-to-width aspect ratio. So, your tire’s sidewalls are 50% of the overall tire’s width.

R: This means your tire has radial construction, and the internal body piles radiate outward from the center.

17: The last number is the rim diameter, which, in this case, is 17 inches.

So, with the 94V, it deals with the performance capacities. Both details should get cross-referenced with your tire’s manufacturer’s index. The 94 is the load-carrying capacity. These tires have a load index of 94, which means they can handle a load of 1,477 pounds. The V means the tires can hit a max speed of 149 mpg.
