How to Open a Honda Key Fob and Replace the Battery

Honda Accord key fob

Your Honda’s key fob offers keyless entry with a remote lock and unlock buttons, remote start, and a panic button. If you begin to notice that the options on your key fob are not working as quickly, or you have to be within close proximity to the vehicle to open the car — your battery might be running out of juice.

DCH Kay Honda is more than happy to change your Honda key fob battery for Freehold drivers, but, unfortunately, batteries usually run out of power at an inconvenient time and place. It is ideal to use an OEM factory Honda battery, but purchasing a high-quality battery at a store will suffice. If you have trouble discerning the battery type, give our service team a call for advice. Luckily, it is easy to replace your battery and takes under five minutes to complete the following steps.

Quick Steps to Change Your Honda Key Fob Battery

Follow these five simple steps to replace your battery:

  1. Determine your battery type: Flip your Honda key fob over, and the kind of battery should show on the back. If you cannot read it, you’ll be able to see the right type of battery once you open the case.
  2. Open your Honda key fob: If your Honda key fob is held together with a small screw, gently use a jeweler’s flathead screwdriver to unscrew it. Ensure that you do not place too much pressure as this could strip the screw or damage the key fob. Unscrew until the key fob comes apart.
  3. Remove the dead battery: Take note of the negative side of the battery to make sure you install the fresh battery properly. Be careful not to touch the battery terminals with your fingertips, as the oil from your fingers can corrode the battery terminals.
  4. Insert the battery: Replace the battery in the same position as the original battery. If you are unsure, look for the positive (+) and negative (-) markings on the inside of the key fob.
  5. Close the key fob: Place the key fob pieces together and replace the screw, making sure you completely close the fob. Test your key fob to see that it is in proper working order. If you purchased more than one battery, tape the extra batteries into the glovebox for later use. Do not tape the extra battery on the key fob, as this can cause corrosion.
